"Be A Sunflower"

Sunday morning when I walked into church, I saw the flowers in front of the pulpit. They were bright yellow sunflowers – some of the biggest I have ever seen. They looked cheery. They brightened the room. They brought a smile to my face. In fact, they brought the whole room to life.

We can be "sunflowers" as we walk through life. We can spread cheer where we go. We can share our smiles with other people. We can be the thoughtful and encouraging people who help to give life back to those who are down and out and discouraged.

This week spread cheer wherever you go. Be a sunflower!

FEATURE FRIDAY

This week's featured sister does not use a computer. So, everyone tell her you saw her online. She'll be amazed! I'm talking about Sue Miller.

Sue is a gift - literally! She was born on Christmas day. She is a housewife and in her words, "Jack of all Trades and Master of None." Sue grew up and still lives in Kennett.

If you spend any time around Sue, you will learn that she loves Brother Gary and her 3 children, but she really loves her grandchildren. She has 3 children - Leigha, Lisa and Chris. They have blessed her with 5 grandchildren - Zachary, Hillary, Taylor, Hannah, and Logan. SHE LOVES HER FAMILY!!!

Sue was saved on a Sunday morning in 1965 at 3rd Street Baptist Church. Just think - she has served the Lord over 40 years! What a testimony, Sue!

Her favorite Scripture is I can do all things through Christian which strengtheneth me. Philippians 4:13. She says, "I really believe this for me!" Sue proved this during this past year when she was very sick and required a couple surgeries and long hospital stays. She depended on the Lord and He got her through.

Sue is a woman after most of our hearts - she loves to shop and anything chocolate!!! If you go to her house, you will quickly realize another thing she loves is to work with flowers. She enjoys reading and the smell of pomegranate.

Sue likes to make people laugh. She proved that last night as she shared some funny stories about children with the ladies. "Sometimes I make people laugh without meaning too. I'm too serious most of the time."

Sue, we love you. We're so glad you're one of our Sisterz.

WELCOME

Welcome to our new follower - Michele Thompson. Michele, it was good to have you in church with us Sunday.

MAKE ME LIKE JOE

Scripture: Hebrews 6:10
“For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers” NLT

Many years ago during one of our family trips into New York City we stopped at a stop light in the Bowery of New York City. Immediately upon stopping a homeless street person approached our car --- spit on the windshield --- and pulled an old dirty rag out of a pocket and began to wash our windshield. I opened my window and handed the homeless street person a dollar. While all this was happening Carol was praying for the windshield washer. We never saw that person again but perhaps his name was Joe as in today’s story.

Joe was a drunk who was miraculously converted at a Bowery New York City mission. Prior to his conversion, he had gained the reputation of being a dirty wino for which there was no hope, only a miserable existence in the ghetto. But following his conversion to a new life in Christ, everything changed.

Joe became the most caring person that anyone associated with the mission had ever known. Joe spent his days and nights hanging out at the mission doing whatever needed to be done. There was never anything that he was asked to do that he considered beneath him --- whether it was cleaning up the vomit left by some violently sick alcoholic or scrubbing toilets. Joe did what was asked with a smile on his face and beaming gratitude for the chance to help. He could be counted on to feed whoever wondered off the street and into the mission. He faithfully tucked into bed men who were stoned or drunk and unable to take care of themselves.

One evening, when the director of the mission was delivering an evangelistic message the usual crowd of sullen men with drooped heads was present to hear --- there was one frequenter in the bunch who stood up in answer to the alter call. He came down the aisle and knelt to pray at the altar. He was crying out to God to help him change. The repentant drunk kept shouting, "Oh God --- Make me like Joe! Make me like Joe! Make me like Joe!"

The director of the mission leaned over and said to the man as he knelt at the altar, "Son, I think it would be better if you prayed, make me like Jesus." The man looked up at the director with a quizzical expression on his face and asked, "Is he like Joe?"

BE AN ENCOURAGER

But encourage each other every day while it is "today." Help each other so none of you will become hardened because sin has tricked you. HEBREWS 3:13

Each day provides countless opportunities to encourage others and to praise their good works. When we do, we not only spread seeds of joy and happiness, we also follow the commandments of God's Holy Word.

How can we build others up? By celebrating their victories and their accomplishments. By just letting them know how we feel about them - that they're encouraging or special - that they have touched your life in some way. So look for the good in others and celebrate the good that you find. When you do, you'll be a powerful force of encouragement for the world ... and a worthy servant to your God.

Let me encourage you to think of at least one person and encourage them today. Call, e-mail, snail mail a card, visit them - whatever you can do. Isn't it great to know we can make a difference in someone's life!
